Born in the Perugia region, Monica Bellucci began her career in modelling. After studying law, she turned to comedy and shot in a TV movie by Dino Risi, Vita Coi Figli (1990), before obtaining her first important role in The Raffle (1991) by Francesco Laudadio. Shortly after, she was spotted by Francis Ford Coppola who offered her a small role in his Dracula in 1992.
She made a few films in Italy, before landing in France, where she became known with The Apartment (1996) by Gilles Mimouni. It is on the set of this romance that she meets Vincent Cassel, her future husband. The two lovers notably play a role in the sulphurous Dobermann (1997) by Jan Kounen and Irréversible (2002) by Gaspar Noé, as well as in the spy thriller Secret Agents (2004) by Frédéric Schoendoerffer. The luscious Italian also deploys her charms in major French productions such as Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) and Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (2002), where she plays the sculptural Egyptian queen.
At the same time, she began an international career, reprising the role originally played by Romy Schneider in Suspicion (2000), the American remake of Garde à Vue, and finding herself facing Bruce Willis in Les Tears du Soleil (2003) by Antoine Fuqua. It also appears in the credits of the last two parts of the Matrix saga: Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions. Directed by Mel Gibson as the great sinner Marie-Madeleine for La Passion du Christ (2004), she literally bewitches Les Frères Grimm(2005) and brings a touch of glamour to the gunfights film Shoot'em-up (2007).
In France, Monica Bellucci shoots for great filmmakers such as Bertrand Blier ( How much do you love me?, 2005), Alain Corneau ( Le Deuxieme souffle, 2007), and goes so far as to flirt with the strange by interfering in the universe of Jean-Christophe Grangé ( Le Conseil de Pierre, 2006) and that of Don't Look Back 2009. As she approaches fifty, the sublime actress continues her brilliant and eclectic career both in the United States ( The Sorcerer's Apprentice with Nicolas Cage ) than in France.
Thus, Philippe Garrel gives her one of the central roles of A Burning Summer (2011), where she gives the reply to Louis Garrel, then she joins the cast of Danièle Thompson's family and choral comedy It Happened In St. Tropez (2013) to then slip into the shoes of a James Bond Girl in 007 Specter alongside athletic spy Daniel Craig.
